Developing gene targeting systems for use in Citrus

The goal of the project is to establish efficient gene targeting systems in Citrus using CRISPR technology. The capability to perform gene targeting in Citrus is essential, as precision breeding of many useful traits in different Citrus cultivars requires specific insertions, deletions or changes at endogenous DNA sequences.

Spread of HLB to citrus orchards in central California is a clear and present danger. The Central California Tristeza Eradication Agency (CCTEA) has a Non-Regulatory Diagnostics Permit from CDFA to test for HLB.

If nascent CLas infections can be arrested prior to proliferation and systemic movement it will be possible to prevent development of HLB symptoms. To date, most research regarding the effects of chemical treatments on CLas affected trees has been conducted with trees in advance stages of HLB decline and essentially no beneficial treatments have been identified.

Reducing the Spread of HLB and Citrus Psyllids by Speakers of Chinese, Vietnamese, and Korean

The expected impact of this project is to reach speakers of Chinese, Vietnamese, and Korean on the internet and teach them how to avoid the spread of citrus psyllids and HLB. Teaching people to avoid the spread of citrus psyllids and HLB will save citrus trees.

Evaluation of new postharvest treatments to reduce postharvest decays in packinghouses

We continue to evaluate new fungicides including natamycin (BioSpectra) and propiconazole (Mentor) that are promising for the control of postharvest diseases of citrus especially sour rot (the latter fungicide was registered in Japan with an MRL and FAT as of July 2018).

Control of Mucor Rot and Gray Mold on Citrus Fruit

Mucor rot caused primarily by Mucor piriformis and gray mold caused by Botrytis cinerea are two emerging postharvest diseases affecting stored mandarin fruit and can cause significant economic losses if left uncontrolled.

Investigating Lemon Fruit Drop (LFD) in the Desert Region

The Desert Region of California accounts for over one-fourth of the state bearing acreage of lemon. Recently, excessive preharvest fruit drop of lemon has been reported by several growers in the Desert Region of California, in addition to lemon growing areas in Arizona, primarily affecting Limoneira 8A, Eureka, and Foothill Lisbon on Macrophylla and Volkameriana rootstocks.
